MTN Uganda, through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm, MTN Foundation, has successfully graduated 253 young individuals in Eastern Uganda from its Digital Literacy Program, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to equip youth with essential digital skills. Notably, 54% of the graduates were women, reflecting MTN’s focus on promoting gender equity in technology and empowering women to participate fully in the digital economy.

The two-week intensive training which was held at MTAC Mbale Campus and Mahanga Senior Secondary School in Nagongera Sub County in Tororo District, was delivered in collaboration with the Maendeleo Foundation, providing participants with foundational ICT skills, empowering them to explore opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and employment.

The graduation ceremony follows similar graduations in Western Uganda, where 378 youth, including 217 women, completed the program in September, and in Northern Uganda, where over 100 individuals graduated last month.

Allan Njagala, MTN Uganda’s Head of Commercial Eastern Region, speaking at the graduation ceremony at the MTAC Mbale Campus, underscored MTN’s ongoing commitment to ensuring inclusivity and diversity in the digital space. “We firmly believe that everyone, regardless of background, should have access to the benefits of a modern, connected life,” he said. “This initiative is more than just about teaching digital skills, it is about empowering individuals, embracing diversity, and ensuring a future where all Ugandans can thrive in the digital economy.”

The Digital Literacy Program aligns with MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, focusing on driving nationwide digital and financial inclusion. This initiative also supports Uganda’s Vision 2040, National Development Plan III, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive digital economy.

Since its inception in 2022, MTN’s Digital Literacy Program worth UGX500 million has reached out to 4,224 Ugandans, including 2,009 women and 2,215 men, across three phases. The program is set to continue its expansion with the goal of empowering one million young people by 2025 through the MTN Skills Academy.

Meanwhile, the graduation ceremony also featured a quiz for the graduates, with top performers receiving laptops and internet access to further enhance their digital learning experience.

The Inspector of Schools for Mbale City, Wangwe Moses applauded MTN Uganda for the digital literacy program and said it aligns perfectly with the country’s National Digital Transformation Roadmap, Vision 2040, and the National Development Plan III.

Uganda is embracing the digital age, and the fintech sector is growing rapidly, transforming how people access financial services. At the forefront of this change is MTN Mobile Money (U) Ltd (MTN MoMo), a leader in mobile financial services that is making it easier for Ugandans to engage with their finances.

MTN MoMo offers a wide range of services, including a robust credit ecosystem that enhances financial access and supports economic growth across the country. Through partnerships with respected financial institutions like NCBA, KCB, PostBank Uganda, and Jumo, MTN MoMo has brought to the customers several innovative products—such as MoKash, MoPesa, XtraCash, MoMo Advance, Mosente, and XtraStock. These offerings meet the diverse financial needs of our customers, from personal loans for individuals to credit options for small businesses, helping millions of unbanked and underserved citizens simply by dialing 165*5# and following prompts.

Imagine a small shop owner easily ordering new stock or a boda-boda rider obtaining a microloan to purchase another motorcycle. With services like MoKash, MoSente, and Xtracash, customers can access savings, credit, and overdraft options. MTN MoMo has also expanded its network of providers by incorporating KCB, PostBank, and Jumo through the launch of MoPesa, XtraCash, and Mosente respectively. However, to encourage responsible borrowing, customers can only take credit from one provider at a time and must pay off any previous debts before accessing new credit.

The impact of MTN MoMo goes far beyond individual users. Its Zimba Business service is specifically designed to support small enterprises by providing quick loans and enabling seamless merchant-to-merchant payments. For small business owners, accessing financial resources has never been easier. By dialing *155# and selecting “Get Loans,” entrepreneurs can secure the funds they need to manage their cash flow effectively, pay suppliers on time, and grow their operations without a heavy reliance on cash transactions. This service not only empowers entrepreneurs but also enhances the overall efficiency of business operations in Uganda.

MTN MoMo’s innovations too play a crucial role in the broader economy. By offering easy access to credit, the platform boosts economic activity, creates jobs, and helps reduce poverty. It fosters a culture of entrepreneurship, enabling small businesses to thrive and contribute to the nation’s economic development. As these businesses grow, they create employment opportunities, stimulate local economies, and enhance the overall standard of living in communities across Uganda.

The success of MTN mobile money is evident in the burgeoning fintech sector in Uganda. For instance, in the recently released interim results for 9 months of 2024 alone, the number of MTN MoMo users surged by  13.2%, reaching an impressive 13.2 million. Transaction volumes also rose significantly, increasing by 25.1% to 3 billion transactions valued at UGX114.5 trillion. These statistics underscore how MTN MoMo is enhancing financial access for millions of Ugandans, enabling them to participate more fully in the economy and improve their quality of life.

MTN believes that everyone should enjoy the benefits of a connected life, with access to financial services being a vital part of that vision. The evolution of MTN MoMo’s credit ecosystem reflects this commitment, empowering individuals and businesses to overcome financial challenges and seize new opportunities. By continually expanding its service offerings and refining its credit solutions, MTN MoMo is ensuring that financial inclusion remains at the forefront of its mission.

In addition to individual empowerment, MTN MoMo is also contributing to the development of a more robust financial infrastructure in Uganda. By integrating various financial services and promoting responsible borrowing practices, MTN MoMo is not just facilitating transactions; it is nurturing a sustainable financial ecosystem. This environment supports innovation and encourages the development of new financial products tailored to meet the needs of diverse consumer segments.

MTN MoMo is therefore more than just a mobile financial service; it is an essential player in Uganda’s economic growth and digital transformation. By facilitating access to crucial financial resources—including savings, credit, overdrafts, utility payments and school fees payments —MTN MoMo stands as a central hub in the financial lives of Ugandans.

It’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and economic prosperity is evident in its various initiatives, empowering individuals and small businesses alike. As Uganda continues to embrace digital innovation, MTN MoMo is poised to remain a cornerstone of the nation’s journey towards financial inclusivity and economic development.

The fellows will undergo training in International Computer Driving License (ICDL), business skills, and technical skills, all designed to equip them with the tools needed to thrive in the fourth Industrial Revolution.

Stephen Mutana, the Chief Strategy and Stakeholder Officer at MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited expressed his enthusiasm for the new cohort. “We are proud to welcome these talented individuals to the MTN Ace Program,” he told the press. “We are committed to empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators to create sustainable solutions for their communities —through initiatives like this.”

The selected fellows will commence their training in the coming weeks.

The training is divided into three key phases: the ACE Skilling Program, which offers foundational skills in essentials of computing, technical, and soft skills; ACE Career, which provides fully paid internships for 3 months; and ACE Enterprise, a business incubation phase designed to nurture startups that cover 6 months.

Participants will first complete a three-month online training program under the ACE Skilling phase, which focuses on essential technical computer skills and soft skills. Top-performing fellows will either advance to the ACE Career or ACE Enterprise pathways, where they will be evaluated for internship placements or business incubation opportunities.

The MTN ACE Program continues to position itself as a critical tool in addressing youth unemployment in Uganda. With 75% of the country’s population under 30 years and a youth unemployment rate of 13.3%, programs like MTN ACE are essential in equipping youth with the skills necessary for job creation and innovation.

In collaboration with key partners, including the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, MUBS Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Incubation Centre, Centenary Technology Services, Engage Consult, the National ICT Innovation Hub, and MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited, MTN is committed to supporting youth-led startups, enhancing employability through digital skills for digital jobs, and bridging gaps in the country’s digital and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Steven Kirenga, the General Manager of Product & Business Development and Customer Experience at Centenary Technology Services expressed enthusiasm about assisting youth in acquiring technical skills that will empower them to establish their businesses.

“We are excited about helping the youths with technical skills that will enable them to create their enterprises,” said Kirenga —while he emphasized that the MTN ACE program will be anchored in the Digital Transformation Roadmap, guiding participants to focus their innovative ideas on national priority sectors such as commercial agriculture, oil and gas, tourism, health, manufacturing, ICT, etc.

Dr. Diana Nandagire Ntamu, Director at the MUBs Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Incubation Centre also applauded MTN Uganda for the program in preparing the youths for the job market.

“Over time, we have recognized that while universities offer a strong theoretical foundation, they often fall short in equipping students with the practical skills needed to thrive in the workforce,” she said. “That’s why we are committed to providing our fellows with the essential skills that will empower them to succeed in their careers.”

As part of its long-term strategy, MTN Foundation remains dedicated to uplifting communities and empowering youth across Uganda through impactful initiatives like the MTN Ace Program. Now in its second phase since its launch in December 2022, the Program, with an investment of UGX 2.17 billion aims to empower graduates, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and innovators by delivering practical knowledge, skills, and experiences. The goal is to prepare participants to address their communities’ pressing challenges using innovative ICT solutions.

Mutana also emphasized that the program is closely aligned with the company’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, Uganda Digital Transformation Roadmap, Uganda’s National Development Plan III, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equity.

Last year, MTN Uganda accepted 280 fellows into the program, with 185 graduating across the three disciplines. With over 500 5G sites across the country, MTN Uganda is making waves in the digital space with its ongoing Gaga campaign, offering affordable 5G data bundles. These bundles are designed to give users high-speed access to 5G technology, enabling them to experience ultra-fast internet on compatible devices. This initiative demonstrates the telco’s commitment to democratizing technology and bridging the digital divide, ensuring that more Ugandans, regardless of financial standing, can tap into the power of 5G.

Through the Gaga campaign and other 5G initiatives such as Wakanet 5G, MTN Uganda is leading the charge towards 5G data liberalization, ensuring that this transformative technology isn’t just available to the elite but is accessible to every Ugandan. By making 5G affordable, MTN is empowering individuals and businesses to harness the full potential of the internet —whether it’s for education, work, or entertainment.

Somdev Sen, the MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer notes that with the ongoing Gaga campaign, MTN Uganda is not just introducing a faster internet connection but rather opening the door to new possibilities, helping individuals and businesses step into the future.

“We believe that connectivity is a key driver of development. Our investment in 5G is a testament to our vision of bringing world-class internet to Ugandans,” said Somdev. “With the affordable 5G bundles through the Gaga campaign, we are ensuring that everyone —whether a student, an entrepreneur, or a large enterprise —can access the fastest internet at the most affordable price.”

For individual users, MTN’s affordable 5G bundles unlock new possibilities. In a significant leap towards  Uganda’s digital transformation journey, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) successfully conducted the country’s first-ever digital national population and housing census in May. This milestone marked a radical shift from traditional data collection methods and showcases the transformative power of digital tools in public sector operations.

For the first time, the census data was collected, processed, and analyzed digitally, enabling UBOS to release preliminary results in a record-breaking time of just one month. This rapid turnaround represents a significant improvement over the manual processes used in previous censuses, which could take months, if not years, to finalize.

This remarkable achievement was facilitated by UBOS’s partnership with MTN Uganda, a key enabler in the country’s digitalization journey. The telco provided the critical digital infrastructure required for seamless data collection through its extensive network and advanced digital technologies.

Highlighting the role of MTN Uganda during the census, Ivan Atwiine, Head of Digital Solutions at UBOS said, “MTN provided internet access at our data center, enabling us to conduct more advanced analyses and secure cloud storage as a backup solution.” He added, “We appreciate the support from MTN and thank them for playing their role in the digital transformation of Uganda.”

“For us as digital players in the market, underscoring the significance of such partnerships in shaping Uganda’s digital future,” concludes Atwiine.

The introduction of digital tools in the census process reduced the time & effort required to gather data increasing accuracy, and security, ensuring that the final data set is more reliable. This was a critical step in ensuring that Uganda can access accurate population insights faster, aiding in better planning and policy-making at both the local and national levels.

As one of the key drivers of Uganda’s digital transformation, the telecommunication firm continues to invest heavily in infrastructure and technologies that enable institutions like UBOS to embrace digital solutions. These investments align with MTN’s commitment to lead digital solutions for Uganda’s progress, which encompasses digital innovations that enhance operations for public and private sector players under the initiative “business done better”.

As Uganda celebrates the success of its first digital census, the implications extend far beyond this single project. The efficiency and accuracy demonstrated by UBOS offer a blueprint for other digital initiatives, from e-governance to healthcare digitization.

Moving forward, UBOS and MTN’s collaboration could serve as a model for other public sector players looking to harness technology for public sector innovation.
