]]>
Lately, we have been encountering the concept of 5G Technology that has created a storm all around, with people saying it will change how we connect, communicate, and interact. The reality is: that we are not just moving from 4G to 5G, we are stepping into a development period that will change our entire digital environment. The technology enables us to rethink communication —we examine its features, its application to different industries, and the difficulties ahead.

The 4G to 5G leap

To truly grasp the influence of 5G, one must clearly articulate the distinctions between it and the previous 4G technology. Through 4G, we gain speed, access, and connectivity, yet 5G goes far beyond the capabilities provided by 4G. Visualize lightning-fast download of an entire HD movie or have a video conference without that annoying time delay—that is the reality of 5G.

The most fascinating thing about 5G is its breathtaking speed. Networking technology with a potential data rate of up to 20 Gbps users can upload and download data extremely faster than 4G. This indicates no longer waiting for file download or video buffering; it is all done in the blink of an eye.

Latency, the time it takes for the transfer of data to start using 5G after sending a command, can be lowered to even one millisecond, which is an extreme feat for applications that operate in real-time. Imagine the necessity of this for vehicles that drive autonomously and must communicate in real-time with each other and their surroundings for the safety of humans.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing at a very fast pace, and there are predictions that billions of devices are going to be linked up in the next few years. 5G has the capability of supporting 1 million connected devices per square kilometer which makes it perfect for cities or areas where numerous gadgets have to work at the same time without any interruptions.

Network slicing is one of the most attractive features available in the telecom industry because it allows the creation of virtual networks within a single physical network. Each slice can be customized to the specific application or service, thereby ensuring the best performance and security that is effectively tailored to different user needs.

Transforming personal communication

Going beyond the speed of the internet, 5G technology has broad implications, as it brings about a paradigm shift in the very nature of our face-to-face communication. The emergence of 5G brings voice calls and video conferencing to a new quality level of low-latency and crystal clear thus the voices will be flawless.

What do you reckon about having a video call with your friends or family members where you can see everything without any pixelation and lag? It may as well be the truth that you are next to each other if the quality and effect are so high that you feel like they are in the same room with you.

5G technology can eliminate geographical barriers. Thus, distributed teams and remote employees will be able to communicate smoothly within teams, conduct high-quality video meetings, and share files quickly. This feature can be the key to the efficiency of teams, which can come together quickly and decide issues in different ways and with great effect, thus unleashing a new era of information communication.

Revolutionizing business communication

Businesses are bracing for a transformation in drastic measures of sustainability through 5G deployment in the near future. Through the advancements in communication technology, exceedingly smoother communications will be enabled for both employees internally and customers and partners outside as well.

Within organizations, the staff will experience the joy of quick, up-to-date communication and messaging systems that are no longer. This new environment, as a result, will provide workers with effective and engaging communications, the projects to expand without a single misstep, and the teams to come together with ease, without glitches.

Outside, 5G offers to customer-facing companies emergent and wholly different channels to interact. Businesses can implement state-of-the-art applications which capture real-time data sharing along with enhanced position-based services which help such companies to communicate valuable information and render required assistance to customers.

Picture getting instant messages about special offers or updates directly related to your place. The ability to customize advertising at this level will entirely change customer experiences.

The Internet of Things (IoT) revolution

One of the most thrilling accomplishments of 5G is its ability to support a huge ecosystem of connected devices. We have entered homes, cities, and places of work that are becoming more intelligent by the day, thus the role of IoT in them will become increasingly important.

The use of 5G technology in the smart home will take the performance of such devices to a whole new level. Picture yourself being able to control your lights, thermostat, security cameras, and appliances from your mobile phone with no delay. This smooth interplay is not only good because it is more convenient, but also it enhances the energy-saving feature and security.

Cities worldwide are now embedding smart technologies along with 5G into their systems. The systems of urban areas data traffic management that decreases traffic congestion as per smart waste management systems which collect the trash in an optimum way will transform them into more efficient and sustainable environments.

Impact on healthcare

The healthcare industry would experience significant improvement due to 5G implementation. The telemedicine trend has been growing for a couple of years now; but when it comes to 5G’s ultra-reliable low-latency communication, remote consultations will be even better. Individuals obtain immediate health consultation without traveling long distances, which is crucial for people residing in rural areas and those with mobility disabilities.

Wearable smart devices will bring more benefits, especially, since the increased connectivity would enable them to carry out the primary function of monitoring vital health parameters. The movement of data in real-time between healthcare staff and patients for constant monitoring of health statuses will be possible, and they can thus maintain the health status of the patient uninterrupted, apart from intervening when necessary.

Therefore, 5G technology is a major shift in the way we communicate —and the results are many and dramatic, from improving corporate efficiency and enabling intelligent cities to enhancing human interaction through crystal-clear voice calls and video conferencing.

5G is creating a future without communication barriers where we can connect to anyone or anything at any time, not just for the fast internet. By harnessing this revolutionary technology to its fullest potential, the future is full of possibilities.

Moses Watasa: Government Will Reduce The Cost of Internet by 50% by end of January 2025 https://pctechmag.com/2024/11/moses-watasa-price-of-internet-to-reduce-by-50-by-jan-2025/ Fri, 15 Nov 2024 18:23:24 +0000 https://pctechmag.com/?p=80861 The proposed reductions in internet costs by January 2025, alongside the ambitious goal of achieving nationwide connectivity within the next six years, signify a transformative period for Uganda’s ICT landscape.

The post Moses Watasa: Government Will Reduce The Cost of Internet by 50% by end of January 2025 appeared first on PC Tech Magazine.

]]>
Access to affordable internet is increasingly becoming a critical pillar for social and economic transformation globally. However, for Uganda, high internet costs continue to hinder opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital inclusion. In response, the government is prioritizing policies and investments to address these challenges, with a commitment to reducing internet prices and expanding connectivity to even the most remote areas of the country.

During the Closing Ceremony of Phase One at the Innovation and Growth Acceleration Program, organized by Youth Startup Academy Uganda (YSAU) at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, Moses Watasa, the Commissioner for Information and Communication at the Ministry of ICT was pressed for a timeline on when Ugandans, particularly those in rural and underserved areas, could expect affordable internet. Acknowledging the urgency of the issue, Watasa outlined a comprehensive plan to achieve nationwide internet connectivity within the next four to six years. This timeline reflects the government’s ambition to bridge the digital divide while making internet costs more manageable for the population.

“We have a steep target, I believe we will beat it,” said Watasa. “We want to have internet connectivity across the whole of Uganda within the next four, or not more than six years. I want to thank NITA Uganda, who are building fiber to connect even the remotest parts of the country.”

While fiber optic technology forms the backbone of Uganda’s internet expansion strategy, it is not without limitations. For geographically challenging areas such as islands and mountainous regions, deploying fiber is often impractical. To address this, Watasa said the government is exploring satellite technology to ensure hard-to-get places including islands and mountainous regions can have an internet connection.

One of the central issues in Uganda’s digital landscape is the prohibitive cost of internet access. High costs disproportionately affect young people, including innovators, developers, and entrepreneurs, limiting their ability to leverage technology for growth and development. Watasa said;

When the cost is high, it becomes difficult for young people to innovate.

Watasa revealed that the government will reduce internet prices by at least one-third or even 50% by January 2025. He expressed confidence in this target, stating, “I can say that on the record: if the internet cost doesn’t come down by 50%, you can come and take one of my arms.” This bold commitment underscores the seriousness of the government’s efforts to make internet access more affordable.

The government’s approach is holistic, recognizing that affordable internet is a critical enabler of development across multiple sectors, from education to healthcare and agriculture. By empowering young people with the tools and connectivity they need, the ministry aims to position Uganda as a hub for innovation in the region.

Uganda’s internet pricing has been a persistent concern, with the country ranked among the most expensive in the East African region. According to Cable.co.uk, an internet pricing comparison platform, Uganda ranks 103rd out of 237 countries on internet affordability.

The average cost of 1GB of mobile data in Uganda is approximately UGX5,000, a stark contrast to neighboring countries like Somalia, Rwanda, and Kenya, which rank significantly higher in affordability, according to the Global Digital Report compiled by Meltwater, a global media monitoring firm, in collaboration with other data firms like Statista.

These rankings highlight the urgency of Uganda’s efforts to bring down internet costs and compete regionally in attracting tech-driven investments.

Watasa affirmed that reducing internet costs is a top priority for the government, noting that it is critical for fostering innovation and improving the quality of life for Ugandans.

Also read:

The government’s commitment to affordable internet is backed by substantial investments in nationwide connectivity infrastructure. Through initiatives led by NITA Uganda, the country’s national backbone fiber infrastructure is steadily expanding to cover underserved areas. These investments are complemented by partnerships with the private sector and international organizations to leverage resources and expertise in achieving Uganda’s connectivity goals.

The deputy speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has urged policymakers to swiftly draft and pass relevant regulations around data usage and artificial intelligence (AI).

Speaking at the first data analytics, artificial intelligence, and data governance symposium in Kampala, Tayebwa said he would ensure Uganda catches up with technological development. “Many of our youths in the private sector have run ahead and are already benefitting from AI even in the absence of enabling laws,” he stated. Adding “As a government, we need to work faster to own and manage local data and empower Ugandans to use it to make data-driven decisions”.

He underscored the need to establish a law to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in the country, calling for the strengthening of existing data protection laws at both the continental and national levels for the benefit of users.

In his key note address at the Symposium, Dr. Fred Muhumuza, a senior economist and development expert, said government and Ugandans need to have access to reliable big data to make informed decisions. He highlighted the importance and urgency of data integration and interrogation, especially in the policy environment to enable Social-Economic Transformation in Uganda.

Absa Uganda Seals a UGX19Bn Loan Facility With Mogo Uganda https://pctechmag.com/2024/11/absa-uganda-seals-a-ugx19bn-loan-facility-with-mogo-uganda/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 15:21:17 +0000 https://pctechmag.com/?p=80671 Absa Bank Uganda offers funding to MOGO Uganda to support their mission of providing affordable loans to boda boda operators to acquire electric bikes on hire purchase.

The post Absa Uganda Seals a UGX19Bn Loan Facility With Mogo Uganda appeared first on PC Tech Magazine.

]]>
Absa Bank Uganda has announced a UGX19 billion loan facility partnership with Mogo Loans. The funding will support MOGO Loans’ mission to provide affordable loans to boda boda operators to acquire electric bikes on hire purchase.

The agreement was executed in September 2024, with the first tranche of UGX5 billion disbursed. MOGO Loan will continue to release funds phased by phase as needed for on-lending purposes, with full utilization expected by the end of 2024. This phased approach ensures the customer can align loan disbursements with their operational needs, reinforcing flexibility and support throughout the deal lifecycle.

The structured loan will be repaid over a maximum period of 30 months, empowering hundreds of riders to own environmentally friendly electric bikes that are cheaper to maintain and operate.

Speaking at the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the Executive Director and Head of Markets for Absa Bank Uganda, David Wandera, said the deal underscores the bank’s commitment to supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy and enabling even greater financial inclusion.

“This partnership goes beyond a typical loan transaction. We are aware that a significant share of economic activity is within the informal sector, however, access to financial services remains the main obstacle to the growth of informal businesses and could be a possible incentive for them to formalize,” said Wandera. “We are pleased to enter this unique arrangement with MOGO Loans, which will drive greater financial inclusion, delivering credit to the last mile, while also contributing to a green economy.”

MOGO Uganda CEO Mikhail Vydryn said, “MOGO Uganda has demonstrated significant investment in the country, with a net loan portfolio totaling EUROs 28 million (approx. UGX110.35 billion) funded primarily through equity, shareholder loans, and offshore debt.” He added, “Absa’s involvement through local currency funding mitigates MOGO Uganda’s FX risk, creating a perfect alignment between Absa’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values and MOGO’s efforts to tackle unemployment in Uganda’s informal sector.”

Mikhail revealed that since their launch in May, they have successfully financed nearly 870 e-boda units, enabling their clients to travel over 2.5 million kilometers using clean electricity. “This initiative has not only resulted in a significant reduction of approximately 70 tonnes of CO₂ emissions but has also created substantial economic benefits for the riders,” he added.

The electric bikes funded through this loan offer a groundbreaking solution to Uganda’s ‘boda boda’ industry. With no emissions, they are environmentally friendly, aligning with global trends toward greener transportation. The bikes also present significant cost savings for riders: for just UGX8,000, riders can charge their bikes for 80 kilometres, far more efficient than fossil fuel bikes, which cost UGX10,000 for 70 kilometres.

The lower operational and maintenance costs make this an innovative and economically viable alternative.

Speaking about the facility, the bank pointed out that this was a landmark agreement, requiring navigation of complex negotiations and multi-jurisdictional legal frameworks to protect all parties involved.

“Despite the lack of tangible security, Absa Bank Uganda confidently entered this partnership based on the strength of MOGO Loan’s corporate guarantees and the potential of the project,” said Wandera. “At Absa Bank, we believe that our clients’ stories are central to everything we do. Every transaction we engage in is a testament to our commitment to empower, uplift, and transform the communities we serve.”

He concludes by saying “This partnership with MOGO Loan reflects our ongoing investment in solutions that address local challenges while promoting sustainable growth.”

With this financing, MOGO Uganda projects that they will be able to reach 1,000 electric motorbikes issued through the hire purchase arrangement by the end of November 2024, easing the financial burden on many informal operators who are often expected to pay upfront for these assets with large sums of money they may not have.

Blue Crane Communication (BCC) has cut prices on its internet packages in a new campaign dubbed “Switch to BCC” following the ongoing high internet costs in the country. Running until the end of this year, the initiative aims to empower customers to benefit from unlimited internet packages at lower prices and exceptional bandwidth options—designed to meet the growing demand for affordable, quality internet in Uganda.

Ali Kisekka, the Head of SME and Home Sales at BCC confirmed the announcement in a phone interview calling upon internet users to switch to using BCC’s internet —emphasizing and we quote “BCC’s internet service is available to all customers.” Adding “With the Switch to BCC, we’re offering customers a unique opportunity to experience faster internet at lower prices and ensuring that both home users and businesses (SMEs) can enjoy seamless connectivity that enhances productivity.”

He urged customers to subscribe to BCC and enjoy the benefits, including superior customer service, technical support, and the flexibility to upgrade or downgrade bandwidth without changing physical infrastructure.

“With a focus on quality, accessibility, and customer satisfaction, BCC is dedicated to transforming the digital experience for individuals and businesses,” said Kisekka. “From high-speed internet and power solutions to security and ICT services, BCC is committed to connecting Ugandans with technology that empowers them.”

The campaign was created in response to Uganda’s growing demand for high-speed, affordable internet, especially among SMEs and residents who rely on stable connections for work, education, gaming, and entertainment. Through this campaign, BCC aims to highlight its commitment to innovation and its role in providing essential connectivity services that support the local economy.

BCC internet packages include; 50Mbps for UGX110,000, 75Mbps for UGX150,000, and 100Mbps for UGX200,000.

BCC’s product offerings go beyond internet packages. They also provide advanced security and surveillance, ICT and telecommunication, power solutions, renewable infrastructure, and smart TV solutions. These are all part of BCC’s goal to provide comprehensive tech solutions for Uganda’s evolving digital landscape.

MTN Uganda, through its corporate social responsibility arm, MTN Foundation, has offered 10 computers, free internet, and power backup systems valued at UGX65 million to boost digital access and education at St. Joseph Seminary Nyenga as part of its commitment to empowering youth and bridging the digital divide.

This initiative aims to support the 392 students aged 13 to 20 at St. Joseph Seminary Nyenga, equipping them with the essential tools needed to thrive in today’s digital landscape.

“This is not just about handing over the equipment, it’s about opening doors to knowledge and opportunities for our youth,” said MTN Foundation Senior Manager Bryan Mbasa. “We believe that everyone, regardless of their background, deserves the chance to benefit from a modern connected life. This donation is a vital step in empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and problem solvers.”

The Rector of St. Joseph Seminary Nyenga Fr. Eugene Safari expressed gratitude for MTN Uganda’s generous support saying “The commitment to providing us with a fully equipped computer lab truly highlights its dedication to empowering our future leaders with the skills they need to thrive in today’s digital world.”

Dr. Monsignor Richard Kayondo, the Vicar General of Lugazi Diocese said the lab will give the students access to modern technology and digital resources, helping to cultivate a skilled and tech-savvy workforce for a brighter tomorrow. Monsignor, who doubles as the Chairperson Board of Directors, St Joseph Seminary Nyenga, urged seminarians to use the computer lab responsibly.

Mbasa noted that access to technology is only the beginning and the real impact comes from how students utilize these resources —while encouraging students and teachers to embrace this opportunity to explore, learn, and prepare for their futures.”

The donation aligns with MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, which focuses on driving digital transformation across the country. This initiative also supports Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by promoting digital literacy and capability nationwide.
