Transsion Holding’s subsidiary, Infinix will follow its sister brand Tecno to launch its first foldable smartphone which will be called the Zero Flip. Tecno launched its first foldable smartphone, the Phantom V Flip, in September last year, and now Infinix is set to do the same with the Zero Flip. This comes after the phone got certified by the FCC —meaning it’s likely going to launch in all markets where Infinix devices are currently sold including Uganda.

Infinix Zero Flip is expected to be unveiled soon as the company officially teased its arrival via X, however, the launch date and availability details weren’t revealed. Ahead of anything concrete, alleged promotional images of the foldable smartphone have surfaced online. The images suggest the design of the phone alongside some key features such as it will come with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It will also have two vertically aligned cameras integrated into cutouts from a big square cover display.

Promotional images of the handset have been leaked in a Facebook post by Queen Mobile, a Vietnam-based retailer. The phone is expected to come in Titanium Black and Pink colors —and per leaked images, the phone could have a 6.7-inch full-HD+ AMOLED main screen and a 3.64-inch AMOLED cover display. Both displays are tipped to support a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

The Infinix Zero Flip 5G will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 SoC. It is expected to run on Android 14-based XOS 14.5 powered by a non-removable 4,590mAh battery with 70W wired fast charging support. Connectivity options of the phone are expected to include 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC.

The handset is expected to carry dual stereo speakers with support for DTS, Hi-Res Audio, and TUV certification.

For optics, the Infinix Zero Flip will likely be equipped with a dual rear camera unit, including a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 10.8-megapixel secondary sensor. The front camera is tipped to house a 12-megapixel sensor. The front and rear cameras are said to support 4K 30 FPS video recording.Preview (opens in a new tab)

These are all the specs that have been outed so far. Since Infinix plays the mid-range game, don’t expect this one to come with a flagship chipset or a high price.

Smartphones have become indispensable tools for communication, productivity, and entertainment. One key feature that makes smartphones so versatile is their ability to multi-task. But what exactly does multi-tasking on smartphones entail? How do operating systems handle it, and how does it impact performance and productivity?

Smartphone multitasking explained

Multi-tasking on smartphones refers to the capability of performing multiple tasks simultaneously or switching between tasks seamlessly. Unlike traditional computers, smartphones have limited screen and processing power, making efficient multitasking a crucial aspect of user experience.

Operating systems like iOS and Android approach multitasking differently. iOS employs a more controlled approach, suspending background activities to conserve battery life and maintain smooth performance.

On the other hand, Android offers more flexibility, allowing apps to run in the background, albeit with potential implications for resource management.

Multi-tasking modes

Split-screen and picture-in-picture modes are two prominent features that enhance multitasking on smartphones.

With split-screen, users can view and interact with two apps simultaneously, boosting productivity by enabling tasks like researching while writing or watching videos while browsing.

Picture-in-picture takes this a step further, allowing users to overlay a small video window on top of other apps, perfect for watching tutorials or video calls while multitasking.

Managing resources

Resource management is a critical aspect of smartphone multitasking. Smartphones dynamically allocate CPU and RAM resources to active apps, prioritizing foreground tasks for optimal performance. However, extensive multitasking can strain the device’s resources, leading to slower responsiveness and reduced battery life.

To optimize multitasking, users can employ strategies such as closing unused apps, minimizing background processes, and utilizing task management tools. Additionally, third-party apps can enhance multitasking capabilities by providing features like floating windows, app pairs, and gesture shortcuts.

While multitasking can increase efficiency in certain contexts, it’s essential to recognize its limitations. Excessive multitasking can lead to cognitive overload, decreased focus, and lower overall productivity. Therefore, it’s crucial to strike a balance and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency.

We must not overlook security and privacy considerations. Running multiple apps simultaneously increases the risk of data breaches and unauthorized access. Therefore, users should prioritize security measures such as enabling device encryption, using secure passwords, and being cautious of app permissions.

A bright future ahead

Looking ahead, the future of smartphone multitasking holds exciting possibilities. With advancements in hardware and software, we can expect more seamless integration of multitasking features, enhanced resource management, and innovative interaction methods.

Technologies like augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) may further revolutionize how we multitask on smartphones, offering personalized and context-aware experiences.

The post How To Choose Smartphones With Senior-Friendly Features appeared first on PC Tech Magazine.

]]>
Almost 97 percent of Americans have a mobile device, and nine in ten own a smartphone. That’s a notable increase from the 35 percent recorded in Pew Research Center’s first survey of smartphone ownership in 2011.

Although seniors are less likely than the younger generation to own a smartphone, the same survey indicates that 16 percent of adults aged 65 and above rely on this mobile device. Meanwhile, 14 percent of those between 50 and 64 depend on them as well.

Smartphones are helpful for this demographic, especially for their health and safety. For instance, they enable seniors to call for help or contact healthcare providers during emergencies.

Many smartphones are available on the market. But finding one that’s best for seniors can be tricky, mainly if you’re not accustomed to this technology. Here, we’ll walk you through essential features to look for when choosing smartphones for seniors.

Large display options

A smartphone with a large display ensures seniors can see everything on the screen. Otherwise, they might struggle to read messages and receive calls. Thankfully, many smartphones have a zoom feature that enables users to modify the text size on the screen.

Meanwhile, a bigger screen featuring larger icons and text will improve visibility and make it easier to use. It also lowers the risk of unintentional presses and enhances touchscreen accuracy. This feature can contribute to a more seamless user experience.

Voice commands

Voice commands enable seniors to interact with the device hands-free and intuitively. This feature is beneficial, especially for those struggling with fine motor skills. Using voice commands to operate the smartphone can benefit seniors with visual impairments.

With voice commands, seniors can quickly call emergency support lines if unable to dial manually. They can also use it to perform routine tasks, such as scheduling appointments. Some smartphones allow users to dictate complete message responses and have the device read incoming texts aloud.

Hearing aid compatibility

Seniors with hearing impairments will need a smartphone compatible with their hearing aids. Hearing aids with Bluetooth compatibility can connect to most smartphones. Still, check if the device is compatible with your loved one’s hearing aid.

Moreover, the accessibility features in smartphones offer high-definition voice, enhancing clarity during phone calls, multimedia playback, and video calls. It’s essential to consider this so seniors can access important information and remain connected with loved ones without struggling to hear.

Intuitive navigation

Seniors may struggle to navigate a complex interface. When looking for a smartphone for seniors, find a simple interface and an easy-to-navigate screen. This feature makes it easier for them to call or locate the apps they need.

Remember, intuitive navigation is as essential as easy readability. You can use a launcher to make the phone more senior-friendly. It can customize the phone’s interface with a look, layout, and features that better suit the needs of seniors.

Health app support

Finding a smartphone that supports various health apps, from checking blood sugar levels to keeping up with nutrition, is vital. Ensure the device can sync with the specific apps that can help your senior loved one monitor health.

For instance, some apps will provide medical alert reminders. They will make the phone vibrate or beep to inform the senior it’s time to take medication.

More elements to consider;

When selecting smartphones for seniors, considerations go beyond the newest features and sleek designs. The good news is that numerous options are available to accommodate this demographic’s wide range of needs.

Below are more elements to consider when searching for senior-friendly features in a smartphone. They can make a notable impact on the usability of a smartphone for a senior.

Entertainment options

It’s common for seniors to feel both isolated and bored. For this reason, a smartphone with several entertainment options can be a valuable feature.

Whether listening to music, watching videos, or playing games, these activities can help make seniors feel happier and less lonely. It can provide an instant remedy for their boredom as well as an avenue for social connection and mental stimulation.

Camera capabilities

The smartphone’s camera capabilities are necessary, too. A high-resolution camera can be useful, especially for seniors who enjoy taking pictures of grandchildren, friends, and places they visit. Besides capturing special moments, it lets them stay connected with loved ones through video calls.

Battery life

Seniors may rely on their smartphones for communication, entertainment, and safety. Hence, considering the battery life of these devices is imperative.

Ensure the phone’s battery doesn’t run out too often, so seniors don’t have to worry about charging all the time. Remember, they may not always have access to charging stations. Some may have mobility issues, making it harder to charge their phones frequently.

This makes smartphones with a reliable battery life crucial. It guarantees uninterrupted usage, allowing seniors to enjoy their favorite activities and access emergency services when needed.

Scam protection

Equally important is a scam protection feature. These days, numerous scams are targeting vulnerable seniors. They may become victims of government impersonation, tech support, romance, or lottery scams.

Look for a phone with call-blocking features. It’s also wise to consider phone carriers that provide services to help seniors ward off robocalls and scammers. Still, educate your senior loved ones about not sharing personal details with strangers.

Make an excellent choice for your senior loved one

While many seniors can use a basic smartphone with minimal to no difficulty, others may find additional features beneficial. However, the needs of each individual are different. So take the time to assess what your loved one needs and prefers before you begin shopping for them.

Consider checking out brands specifically designed for seniors. Due to increasing demand, many companies are centering their business model around seniors. These brands are starting to produce senior-friendly phones with assistive technology, so you have more options.

Every new day smartphones are being bought/sold across the globe. This is typical because smartphones have become more of individual lifelines, connecting each of us to the world in an instant. However, as our devices age or become cluttered with apps and data, they can start to slow down, leading to frustration and decreased productivity.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to breathe new life into your sluggish smartphone and get it running smoothly again. Here are 10 tips, guiding you to speed up your device and reclaim its former snappiness.

  1. Clear cache and temporary files

Over time, your smartphone accumulates cache and temporary files from apps and web browsing, which can clog up your device’s storage and slow down performance. Cache refers to a type of high-speed data storage that temporarily stores frequently accessed or recently used data. It’s used to speed up data retrieval and improve performance.

Temporary files, also known as temp files or temp data, are files created by applications or the operating system for temporary use. These files are often created during the normal operation of software and are intended to be temporary.

To remedy this, regularly clear out these unnecessary files by going to your device’s settings, then “Storage” or “Storage & cache,” and selecting “Clear cache” or “Clear temporary files.”

  1. Update apps and software

App and system updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes that can help speed up your device. Make sure to regularly check for updates in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and install any available updates for your apps and operating system.

  1. Limit background processes

Many apps run background processes that consume valuable system resources and contribute to sluggishness.

Social media apps, for instance, often run background processes to fetch new posts, notifications, and messages even when the app is not open. Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Slack continuously run background processes to check for new messages, synchronize conversations across devices, and deliver push notifications in real time.

To regain control over your device’s performance, go to your device’s settings, then “Apps” or “Applications,” and review the list of installed apps. Disable or force-stop any unnecessary apps that are running in the background and consuming resources unnecessarily.

  1. Optimize storage

Running low on storage space can significantly impact your smartphone’s performance. Take the time to delete unused apps, photos, videos, and other files to free up space on your device. You can also use cloud storage services such as Google Drive, One Drive, and Dropbox, or external storage devices to offload files and keep your device running smoothly.

  1. Reduce animations and transitions

While animations and transitions can add visual flair to your smartphone experience, they can also slow down your device, especially on older hardware.

To speed up your device, consider reducing or disabling animations and transitions in your device’s settings. On Android, go to “Developer options” and adjust the animation scale settings. On iOS, go to “Accessibility” > “Motion” and toggle on “Reduce Motion.”

  1. Disable or uninstall unused apps

Unused apps not only take up valuable storage space but can also run background processes that drain your device’s battery and slow down performance. Take inventory of your installed apps and remove any that you no longer use or need. This will not only free up storage space but also reduce clutter and streamline your device’s performance.

  1. Enable performance mode (if available)

Some smartphones offer a performance mode or high-performance profile that boosts CPU and GPU performance for demanding tasks. If your device has this feature, consider enabling it to squeeze out extra performance when needed. Keep in mind that enabling performance mode may impact battery life, so use it judiciously.

  1. Restart your device regularly

Just like computers, smartphones can benefit from a fresh start now and then. Restarting your device clears out temporary files, closes background processes, and refreshes system resources, which can help improve performance and stability. Make it a habit to restart your device at least once a week to keep it running smoothly.

  1. Factory reset as a last resort

If all else fails and your smartphone is still sluggish despite your best efforts, performing a factory reset may be necessary. A factory reset will erase all data and settings on your device, returning it to its original state. Before proceeding with a factory reset, make sure to back up any important data, as this process will delete everything on your device.

  1. Consider hardware upgrades

If your smartphone is several years old and struggling to keep up with modern apps and tasks, it may be time to consider upgrading to a newer model with more powerful hardware. Newer smartphones often feature faster processors, more RAM, and better optimization, resulting in smoother performance and improved user experience.

He remarked, “Since joining the Ugandan market in July, we have partnered with over 100 retail partners across the country and already sold over 3000 devices.” Mbabazi added, “With Airtel Uganda’s extensive clientele, this partnership is a significant step towards ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, can enjoy the benefits of owning a smartphone.”

In her concluding remarks, Asio said, “We are excited to embark on this journey together, and we are confident that our collaboration will create a positive impact on the lives of Ugandans and give them a Reason to Imagine.”

The post How to Keep Your Smartphone Camera Clean and Clear appeared first on PC Tech Magazine.

Whether you own an entry-level or mid-range smartphone, maintaining a clean and clear camera is essential to ensure that your snapshots remain sharp, vibrant, and memory worthy. This brief DIY guide walks you through some simple yet effective steps to keep your smartphone camera in tip-top condition.

Keeping your smartphone camera clean and clear involves understanding the various factors that can lead to a dirty or stained camera lens. By being aware of these factors, you can take proactive measures to prevent them and maintain optimal image quality.

What Causes Camera Stains?

Fingerprint: Human hands naturally produce oils and sweat, and when you touch the camera lens with fingers coated in these substances, it leaves behind smudges. Over time, these smudges can accumulate and degrade the quality of your photos.

Dust and Particles: Dust and tiny particles are pervasive in the environment and can settle on your camera lens, affecting image clarity. Whether you’re outdoors or indoors, exposure to these particles is inevitable.

Environmental Factors: The environments in which you use your smartphone play a significant role in keeping your camera clean. Dusty environments, such as construction sites or areas with poor air quality, increase the likelihood of particles finding their way onto the lens.

Accidental Spills: Accidental spills of liquids like water, coffee, or soda can also affect your camera lens. If liquid manages to seep into the lens area, it can create spots, fogging, or even damage internal components.

Proximity to Face: During calls, many users hold their smartphones close to their faces, increasing the chances of skin oils and cosmetics coming into contact with the camera lens. While this might not be immediately noticeable, over time, these substances can contribute to a gradual decrease in photo quality.

How to keep your smartphone camera clean

Start with Clean Hands: Before handling your smartphone, always make sure your hands are clean and free from dirt, grease, or oils. These can transfer onto the camera lens, leading to blurry or distorted photos.

Use a Microfiber Cloth: Invest in a high-quality microfiber cloth — the same kind used to clean eyeglasses or camera lenses. Gently wipe the camera lens with a cloth to remove fingerprints, dust, and smudges. Avoid using abrasive materials like paper towels or clothing, as they can scratch the lens.

Avoid Direct Contact: Try to minimize direct contact between your fingers and the camera lens. Oils from your skin can smudge the lens and affect image quality. Use the edges of your smartphone or a phone case to hold the device securely while taking pictures.

Keep Your Environment Clean: When taking photos, be mindful of your surroundings. Avoid dusty or dirty environments that could expose your camera to particles that might settle on the lens.

Regular Cleaning Routine: Make smartphone camera cleaning a part of your regular maintenance routine. Aim for at least once a week, or more often if you’re frequently using your camera. A clean lens will greatly improve the quality of your photos.

Be Cautious with Liquid Cleaners: While a damp microfiber cloth can be used for more stubborn smudges, it’s important to be cautious with liquid cleaners. Apply the liquid to the cloth first, rather than spraying it directly on the camera lens. Excessive moisture can seep into your phone and damage its internal components.

Protective Phone Case: Consider using a protective phone case that has a raised edge around the camera lens. This design helps prevent direct contact between the lens and surfaces when your phone is placed face-down.

Mind Your Pockets and Bags: When not in use, store your smartphone in a pocket or bag by itself, or at least away from items that could scratch the camera lens. Coins, keys, and other sharp objects should be kept separate to prevent accidental damage.

By following these straightforward yet crucial steps, you’ll ensure that your smartphone’s camera remains clean, clear, and ready to capture those unforgettable moments.

Remember, maintaining a clean camera lens isn’t just about aesthetics — it directly affects the quality of your photos and the memories they preserve.

The post How to Determine if Your Smartphone is Waterproof appeared first on PC Tech Magazine.

]]>
Smartphones have become indispensable companions in our daily lives. With their increasing capabilities and sleek designs, many of us desire devices that can withstand the elements, particularly water. However, not all smartphones are created equal when it comes to water resistance. But just in case you wanted to know if your phone is waterproof, what do you do other done risking dropping it in water? Well,

Check the Manufacturer’s Website or User Manual
The first and most straightforward step is to check the manufacturer’s website or user manual. This should be the easiest way how.

Many modern smartphones, especially premium ones, come with some level of water resistance. The manufacturer will explicitly state the device’s water resistance rating and any limitations related to water exposure.

Look for terms like “IP67”, “IP68” or “MIL-STD-810G” in the specifications, as they indicate the level of water resistance.

Look for Physical Indicators
For many smartphones, there are physical indicators that suggest water resistance.

On Android devices, check for rubber gaskets or seals around the SIM card tray and charging port. Additionally, some Android phones have an extra layer of protection around the buttons.

On iOS devices, the presence of a rubber seal around the SIM card tray and a water-resistant mesh covering the speakers and microphone openings are good indicators.

Test the Water Resistance with Water Resistant Ratings
If you want to go the extra mile and test your smartphone’s water resistance yourself, you can use water-resistant ratings. Please note that performing these tests may void your warranty, so proceed with caution and at your own risk. You can do this for both Android and iOS devices;

  1. Power off your phone to prevent any potential damage during the test.
  2. Clean your phone gently to remove any dust or debris from its surface.
  3. Submerge your phone in a container filled with room-temperature water to a depth of about one meter (approximately three feet).
  4. Adhere to the water-resistant rating duration specified by the manufacturer. For example, if your phone has an IP67 rating, it should withstand water exposure for 30 minutes.
  5. Once the time is up, take your phone out of the water and use a soft cloth to wipe it dry.

Observe for Any Water Damage
After conducting the water-resistant test, carefully inspect your smartphone for any signs of water damage. Look for fogging inside the camera lenses, water under the display, or malfunctioning buttons or ports. If you notice any of these issues, your phone’s water resistance may have been compromised, and it’s crucial to seek professional assistance or contact the manufacturer immediately.

So, knowing whether your smartphone is water-resistant or not can save you from costly accidents. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines and specifications for accurate information regarding water resistance.

If you decide to test your device yourself, proceed with caution, and understand the risks involved. Remember, no smartphone is entirely waterproof, so it’s essential to take precautions and protect your device from unnecessary water exposure.

Through this strategic collaboration, MTN customers will now have access to an extensive selection of Tecno, Itel, and Infinix smartphones in the open market, coupled with the exclusive benefits of the telco’s connectivity services.

To further enhance this customer-centric initiative, MTN Uganda will offer free data (1GB) every month throughout the repayment period, enabling customers to experience seamless connectivity and make the most of their smartphones.

Somdev Sen, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Uganda, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating the telco is thrilled to join forces with TakeNow to bring a wider range of smartphone choices to their esteemed customers.

“At MTN, our focus has always been on delivering exceptional value and convenience to our customers, and this partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to offering industry-leading connectivity solutions,” said Sen adding that “By expanding the smartphone options through Tecno, Itel, and Infinix, we are providing our customers with more opportunities to find their ideal device that fits their lifestyle.”

Sen further said, “Together with Tecno, Itel, and Infinix, we are creating a stronger ecosystem that caters to our customers’ diverse needs, allowing them to stay connected and make progress in this digital age. At MTN, we are dedicated to enabling our customers’ balanced life, and these new smartphones are a testament to that commitment.”

Under the MTN Pay Mpola Mpola scheme, customers can acquire their desired smartphone by making an initial payment of 40% of the total cost [of the phone] —walking away with the device. The remaining balance can then be paid in manageable monthly installments over a period of 6 months.

TakeNow Director of Sales, Ronald Mugulusi, said, “With this partnership, every Ugandan can get a Tecno, Itel, and Infinix smartphone on loan. With a small initial deposit, you can walk away with your favorite smartphone and pay the balance Mpola Mpola, plus these phones come with free MTN 7GB worth of data.”
