The Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) in partnership with the African Women’s Development Fund, last year launched the “Enterprise Development for Women-Owned Ventures in Green Energy” initiative aimed at helping women turn their renewable and green energy enterprise idea into a product or service that customers want to buy.

The Women in Green Energy Ventures Accelerator Programme which is being implemented in Malawi and Nigeria, calls for women-owned and/or women-led enterprises involved in renewable and green energy to apply for this opportunity not later than March 1st, 2021. [APPLICATION LINK]

Only 10 women-owned and/or women-led enterprises will be selected, and shall receive tailored support and training for scaling, one-on-one expert mentoring & coaching, tangible opportunity to raise capital; access to networks, partners and investors for growth.

The Accelerator Programme will take place over a period of eight weeks starting March 15th to May 7th, 2021.

Those eligible are;

  • Women owners or leaders of scalable renewable and green energy businesses.
  • Business must be registered and operating in either Malawi or Nigeria.
  • Business is post-revenue and operating for not less than two years.
  • You are looking for opportunities to raise growth capital.

The Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum is one of Africa’s largest and most prestigious women entrepreneurship platform. It has supported over 1,300 women from 47 countries.

Solar energy company, SolarNow has announced raising $9 million in debt arranged by SunFunder, a longtime debt financier for the company alongside co-lenders responsAbility and Oikocredit.

The $9 million facility is SolarNow’s third structured asset finance instrument, or SAFI, arranged by SunFunder. It will enable the company to deploy 17,500 new off-grid solar systems to customers in Uganda, along with a range of appliances.

SolarNow CEO Willem Nolens commented: “This syndication and the SAFI structure allow us to minimize the fundraising burden and to focus on our business instead. By selecting the right clients and treating them well, our credit portfolio remains healthy and we create a strong foundation for sustainable growth.”

This new investment also marks the 5th anniversary of SolarNow’s partnership with SunFunder, and their debt facility together as well as the second time that Oikocredit and a responsAbility-managed private debt fund have participated with SunFunder to finance the company, after a similar $6m syndication 14 months ago.

According to the announcement, the new systems will amount to around 2.5MW of new installed off-grid solar capacity, resulting in over 210,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions avoided through displaced kerosene for lighting.

As far as impact is concerned, SolarNow estimates that over 70,000 women will gain improved energy access in Uganda. Oikocredit’s Renewable Energy Manager David ten Kroode commented: “Their [SolarNow’s] strategy of offering a wide range of solar products and services to energy-poor communities is perfectly aligned with Oikocredit’s mission to help alleviate poverty by improving access to energy.”

The SAFI product is a tailored receivables financing structure designed by SunFunder for solar companies deploying systems through pay-as-you-go and solar leasing models. SAFI finances their credit offerings directly, allowing them to reach more customers.

Global off-grid renewable energy operator and technology integrator, Winch Energy and African ISP iWayAfrica will deploy a remote solar kiosk under a pilot program.

The Winch Hub (WH®) is a bespoke containerized off-grid solution designed and manufactured by Winch, to provide energy and communication services to residential, public and business customers located in rural environments. It features integrated VSAT equipment to provide high-quality and affordable broadband connectivity.

The kiosk will be made available to five communities in Bunjako Island, a fishing village on the shores of Lake Victoria, with an estimated population of 20,000 people.

This pilot is the proof of concept for a larger project of more than 250 hubs and remote power units to be installed in rural villages providing electricity, wi-fi, water pumping and cold storage services to households, schools, health centers and businesses across the country. This effort will be key in helping to accelerate the Ugandan government’s broadband strategy, particularly its goal of achieving minimum broadband speeds of 3Mbps and coverage of 100% of Uganda’s rural areas by 2020.

“Around 80% of Uganda is unserved by reliable means of electricity, with around 65% of the population remaining without access to the internet”, said Tom Wrigley, Director, Winch Energy Group and Winch Energy Uganda.

“Demand for these services amongst rural populations is significant and it is up to the government and private sector stakeholders to ensure this demand is met, in a rapid and affordable manner.  The objective of this pilot is to demonstrate the commercial and economic sustainability of the ‘multi-service in a box’ approach, which will help us execute our broader plan of rapidly scaling our technology deployment, alongside key public stakeholders”, he added.

“Operating as JOLAspot, the Ku-Band Wi-Fi access service will be available via several access points in the village with voucher purchases from the WH, that will also offer mobile phone charging and printing facilities,” explains Michèle Scanlon, Managing Director, iWayAfrica (VSAT Wholesale Services Division).

“We are in discussions with local companies to manufacture and assemble our technology on Ugandan soil which will help boost the local economy, open up export opportunities, transfer key skills to local personnel and shorten the delivery time to customers”, concluded Wrigley.

East Africa Data Centre (EADC) has announced a partnership with Distributed Power Africa (DPA), a dynamic African renewable energy solutions company and a subsidiary of Econet Global, to install solar panels on its premises, enabling it to move towards achieving 100  percent dependency on renewable energy and to save KES 4.5 million a year.

DPA will set up solar panels on the data center’s rooftop, pathways, and the car parking bay, utilizing all available space to maximize solar power output, providing daytime running of the facility and acting as a backup in times of power blackout from the Kenya Power mains.

EADC general manager Dan Kwach said, “We are now powering EADC with renewable energy standing at 72.6 percent, allowing us to host, connect and support critical data for local and international companies.”

DPA chief executive Norman Moyo said, “This solar project is a 25-year asset that is specially designed for mature telco processes and systems, and through our operational management, maximize the output against its expected lifespan.”

EADC is among a few Uptime certified data centres in Africa that house critical data for clients, including cloud services and data back-up on servers, and is now also supporting Kenya’s first Analytics Data Centre in Strathmore Business School in Nairobi.

Its investments in green power are in line with strategic efforts to curtail global warming effects from use of fossil fuel to generate power.

International renewable energy (RE) power developers are looking to invest in Africa as a result of the continued success of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and the global decline in RE technology costs.

RE suppliers are more specifically looking to explore opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa due to the surplus of RE stocks and services globally, the acute power supply deficit in almost every country of sub-Saharan Africa, and abundant RE resources on the continent.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Large-Scale Renewable Energy Power Development Opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa finds that opportunities for the development of grid-connected solar, wind, and geothermal power projects exist in South Africa,Tanzania, Namibia, Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

The Ivory Coast and Ghana, despite not appearing in the top-five, have also been identified as important countries for their large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) potential. Solar PV is by far the most popular technology in development, followed by wind, geothermal and concentrated solar power (CSP).

“Certain governments across Africa are striving to frame clear regulatory and institutional frameworks in order to rapidly deploy RE power technologies as they have recognised the potential for large-scale RE development,” said Frost & Sullivan Energy & Power Systems Industry Analyst Celine Paton. “Prominent challenges to these efforts, however, include the bankability of the projects, limited grid capacity and the affordability of electricity. Poor long-term planning often compels governments to implement expensive short-term solutions.”

Furthermore, the market will require creative funding schemes that will improve the bankability of RE power projects.

Development finance institutions, like the International Finance Corporation with its Scaling Solar Programme as well as the Climate Investment Funds’ Scaling Up Renewable Energy in Low Income Countries Programme (SREP), are already moving in this direction.

“Following a global trend, governments in most sub-Saharan Africa countries have established increasingly ambitious RE targets for their power sectors,” noted Paton. “Solar, wind, and geothermal technologies will represent the highest growth, slowly eroding the dominant market share of hydropower, which has recently been prone to severe climate change issues.”

As of June 2015, the pipeline of large-scale RE (solar PV, CSP, wind) power projects in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding North Africa,South Africa and the African islands) totalled approximately 14.7 gigawatts.

While only 647 megawatts (MW) is actually under construction, there has been significant progress since early 2014 with the commissioning of flagship projects like the Olkaria I-III-IV geothermal projects in Kenya (306 MW), the Adama II wind project in Ethiopia (153 MW) and the financial close of the Lake Turkana wind project in Kenya (310 MW).

The global market trend – in terms of procurement and contracting mechanisms – is currently favouring a competitive bidding process, similar to the one adopted by the REIPPPP.

The renewable energy feed-in tariff (REFiT) approach also continues to be used in emerging markets like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria and Ghana.

“Overall, strong government support, a long-term vision, astute energy planning and private sector involvement are essential for the successful implementation of RE power projects in sub-Saharan Africa,” observed Paton. “RE power developers that can leverage these factors and garner innovative financing structures will be the ones that optimally tap the opportunities in this dynamic market.”

renewable energyA new report has revealed that in the coming years, Africa and Asia will gradually overtake Europe as one of the key areas of growth in the production and use of renewable energy technologies.

The EY report shows that Germany, which is one of Europe’s leaders in renewable energy technology, suffered with its general election taking place last September, meaning a delay on discussions on how to reduce the cost of green energy.

South Africa is however  enjoying a significant boom of late with regard to clean tech and has previously been voted by the IHS as the best country in the world in which to locate clean technologies.

Also, after a series of delays, phase two of India’s ambitious National Solar Mission attracted bids totalling 2,170MW, almost triple the 750MW on offer.

This solar success will likely boost support for government plans to launch a similar programme for wind; the National Wind Energy Mission, announced in January, will target 100GW of wind power by 2022, a third of India’s estimated wind-energy potential.

Meanwhile, the UK government’s proposals to make mature renewable technologies compete head-to-head for subsidy support from day one of the new contracts for difference regime — on top of cuts already planned — have thrown their market into a spin.

Mixed policy signals on the country’s long-term energy strategy are also continuing to reduce investor confidence in the government‘s commitment to a low-carbon energy future, while the mothballing of a number of large-scale offshore wind projects has also sparked concerns.
